The Mancan of Discordia (translation of "apple of discord") is probably the most famous modernist block buildings in Spain. Thereon Gaudi's Casa Batllo, Casa Amatller Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Casa Lleo Morera by Lluis Domenech i Amatller and Montaner. The block overlooks the street Passeig de Gracia in the heart of the city.
Trying to describe these three buildings, their fresh ideas of modernism, is difficult - you must see with your own eyes. They show an amazing and totally uninhibited approach in designing buildings for a short period from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. This kind of artistic freedom has never reproduced by other architects and even if you do only moderately interested in architecture, you'll be amazed by these incredible structures.
brief summary of each building
Amatller The Casa was built in 1900 and contrasts with the creations of Gaudi by using themes and unstructured forms. Some try to classify it as Gothic, others say it is inspired by the Dutch. It now houses a Centre on modernism that manages plans and visits to tourist sites of Modernist Barcelona.
Casa Lleo Morera was built between 1902 and 1906 and is quite "Gaudiesque" at first glance. The building is covered in detail around windows and balconies and the building is magnificent.
